SNARI Meeting Minutes
April 11, 2011

Opening:
A meeting of the Student Nurses Association of Rhode Island took place on        Monday, April 11, 2011 at 5:30 pm at United Nurses and Allied Professionals Headquarters in Providence, RI.


Present:

            Meghan Butka - RIC, Vice President of SNARI
            Sarah Satterlee - RIC, Treasurer of SNARI
            Elizabeth Bloom - State Advisor, St. Joseph School of Nursing

Topic: NSNA Paperwork & Membership

Discussion:
  • Officer information submitted to Beth Bloom for submission to NSNA
  • $30 membership fee to NSNA and $5 come back to SNARI as revenue
  • Salve Regina University's student’s attended this year’s convention and have offered to share experience.  Board members would like to attend next year’s NSNA spring convention
  • Goal: All SNARI members will be members of NSNA and work to increase student enrollment in NSNA across the nursing school

  • Overall feedback at convention was good
  • Had some mixed feedback submitted electronically. Concerns/feedback  included:

  • Made approximately $1000 from sales
  • K. Kichefski to count leftovers to determine true profit
  • Discussion of options for selling leftovers
  • L. DeNoncour previously suggested selling at schools

Discussion: Kaplan/ Vendors
  • Kaplan was a big hit and would like to invite next year
  • Vendors left early
  • Some students didn't realize where the vendors were 
  • Suggestion of signage next year and a more central location 
  • Idea to delegate times for specific schools to visit vendors

Topic: 2012 Convention

Discussion:
  • Tentative Date: March 28, 2012
  • Potential Theme: Specialties in Nursing
  • Morning speakers: Panel of nurses from different specialties (oncology, emergence, etc.) 
  • Continuing Education (RN to BSN, MSN, NP, DNP, Certifications)
  • Afternoon Speaker: Students liked Linda Silvestri, would like to bring her back for more NCLEX questions 
  • Afternoon program:     Building Professional Self: Resume,                                               Interview, Professional organization membership (SNARI, NSNA)
  • Food: Feedback about 2011 food was that it was too pricey
  • Bathrooms: Due to the imbalance of male and female attendees, possibly use one men's room as an additional women's room to more quickly accommodate female attendees.
  • Name Tags: color coded based on school colors to facilitate camraderie

  • J. Jose to contact ROTP for date availability and to discuss food pricing and options

Discussion:
  • M. Butka announced SNARI is now on LinkedIn and Twitter
  • SNARI Store tab is up and running with T-shirts for $12 ($10 for shirts + 2 for shipping)
  • M. Butka will add tabs for Committees: Community Outreach and Planning Committee

Discussion:
  • S. Satterlee suggested that SNARI focus more efforts on Community Outreach and aim to be involved in one (1) a month
  • Members can either opt in or out of Community Outreach Committee
  • Planning Committee will consist of all active SNARI members

  • S. Satterlee will chair Community Outreach Comittee
  • Ideas for community involvement projects should be submitted at meetings, in person, or through website

Discussion:
  • K. Kichefski presented the idea of an email address [email protected], for communication amongst SNARI members, ensuring that all members receive all communications
  • An officers and advisors email will be created, [email protected]

January 5, 2011

Opening:
A meeting of the Student Nurses Association of Rhode Island took place on        Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 4:00 pm at United Nurses and Allied          Professionals Headquarters in Providence, RI.

Present:
            Renee Cacchiotti – URI, President of SNARI
            Marianne Quinlan, RIC, Vice President of SNARI
            Sarah Satterlee – RIC, Treasurer of SNARI
            Elizabeth Bloom – State Advisor, St. Joseph School of Nursing
            Jeanne Jose – UNAP, Planning committee
            Laura DeNoncour – RIC, planning committee
            Jacqueline Janicki – Salve Regina University, planning committee
            Anita Creamer – Liaison, RISNA

Discussion:
R. Cacchiotti reported that Kristen Kitchefski from Ritzy Pics would donate time to take pictures at the SNARI convention.  These could possibly be placed on the web site or used for a press release.

SNARI now has a web site.  Information regarding the association will be placed on the site as well as eventually a mission statement

Discussion:
  • Rough draft of program distributed.
  • Program reviewed. 
  • R. Cacchiotti reported that Joyce Butler will be speaking in the afternoon and her topic will be communication between co-workers, nurses and students, communications techniques and civility in the workplace.
  • (?) CEU’s for the program
  • Discussion took place regarding having a speaker to address the NCLEX examination.
  • Discussion took place about the possibility of having nurse recruiters from all the hospitals in RI be available to speak at the convention.
Action:
  • R. Cacchiotti to forward information to J. Jose regarding CEU’s for Joyce Butler’s program.
  • R. Cacchiotti to talk to Kaplan about review course.
  • J. Janicki to contact L. Silvestri regarding speaking at the convention.
  • R. Cacchiotti to draft a letter to be sent to nurse recruiters or nurse educators at area hospitals.
  • Committee members to send the letter to area hospitals.
  • B. Bloom will send to Fatima, J. Jose will send to Westerly, Kent and Landmark, Anita Creamer – VA Hospital, R. Cacchiotti – Woman & Infants, Pawtucket-Memorial, The Miriam, M. Quinlan – Roger Williams, J. Janicki – Newport Hospital, S. Satterlee – South County Hospital and Butler.

Topic:  Community activities


Discussion:
  • S. Saterlee reported that she attended a program sponsored by The March of Dimes. 
  • R. Cacchiotti reported that the committee was able to get many donations for the Toys for Tots drive.

Topic:  Goals for next meeting

Discussion:
  • Discussion took place regarding what needed to be accomplished by the next meeting.
  • Hopefully will get a response to the letters being sent to nurse recruiters.
  • Determine who will be speaking in what time slot.
  • Hopefully will elect an officer for the next year who is familiar with websites.
  • Discuss scheduling a meeting for all advisors of the Schools of Nursing in RI to get school involvement in the organization.
  • Discussion took place regarding the By Laws of the organization and the possibility of amending them
  • Discussion took place about the function of SNARI.
  • Discussion took place about how to elect officers for 2011-2012. Ideally would have a representative form each of the Schools of Nursing
Action:
Schedule a strategic meeting after the annual convention to determine the future of SNARI

Topic:  Convention/Raffle

Discussion:
  • Students will once again be asked to bring a donation for the RI Food Bank and will receive a raffle ticket for each item donated.
  • R. Cacchiotti stated that she would approach Alexanders uniforms regarding donating a gift to be raffled off.
  • Schools will be asked to donate something to be raffled off.
  • Will conduct 50/50 raffle.

Flyer will be made and distributed to the Schools of Nursing and will be placed on the web site.

L. DeNoncour updated the committee on the status of the t-shirts and the possibility of selling them at the convention.
